Reviving and repairing Gel Coat on a classic glassfibre yacht.

In this blog and corresponding video, we're diving into the restoration of Gel Coat and our example boat is yet another Contessa 32 sailboat from the mid-70s. This particular vessel has weathered the elements overseas, with its gelcoat on the deck showing significant signs of sun damage.

Join me, George Instead The Solent Boat Butler, as we explore the restoration process, discuss the options available, and witness the transformation of this classic beauty!

Options for repairing gel coat:

When dealing with the repair and restoration of gel coat on a vintage glass fibre boat like this, there are typically three main options:

Option 1: The first is to repaint the surface, providing a fresh finish. However, concerns about durability and potential damage in high-wear areas make this option less appealing.

Option 2: Another increasingly popular choice is vinyl wrapping, but this material can be even more susceptible to damage in areas prone to wear and tear.

Option 3: The third option, and the one we've chosen for this Contessa, is to re-gel coat the surface.

Advantages of option 3, Re-coating The Gel Coat : Re-gel coating offers a durable solution, providing a thicker layer of material that can withstand the rigors of marine life. Although it involves more work, including sanding and polishing, the end result is a finish that closely resembles the boat's original appearance from nearly 50 years ago.

In the video: In the accompanying video, you'll catch a glimpse of the Contessa's deck, marked by damaged gel coat around the olive holes. The non-slip surface, crucial for safety on a sailboat, has also suffered wear and tear. The restoration plan involves carefully re-gel coating the damaged areas, extending up to the non-slip surface. This meticulous approach ensures a seamless transition between the gel coat and non-slip sections, creating a visually cohesive and durable finish.
